Survivability From a Sow’s Ear: The Retrofit Security Requirement
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper considers the survivability requirement for production operating systems that underlie typical information systems. Since economic incentives give competitive advantages to imperfect and therefore insecure software, it seems inevitable to consider retrofitting some form of security to existing systems. This approach has long been anathema in the security community. We outline the pragmatic alternative of retrofitting security to achieve information survivability.

Survivability and Simulation
The past few years have shown a need for fundamentally new approaches to the security and survivability of large scale networked systems. Infrastructures and other modern systems pose problems that arise from many factors: partial information, complexity of combined interactions of very large numbers of human and automated participants, ubiquitous access, loss of centralized administrative cont...

1 INTRODUCTION We have begun to investigate a new architectural model for survivability monitoring and control of complex distributed information systems, such as those that underpin critical civic and other infrastructures. The model is a synthesis of two streams of thought. The first was presented in " Information Survivability Control Systems [4]. " That work suggests an approach to dynamic ...

Seismic resiliency of new buildings has improved over the years due to improved seismic codes and design practices. However, vulnerability of seismically deficient older buildings, designed and built on the basis of older codes of practice, poses a significant threat to life safety and survivability of buildings. It is economically not feasible to retrofit the entire seismically deficient infra...

Society is growing increasingly dependent upon large-scale, highly distributed systems that operate in unbounded network environments. Unbounded networks, such as the Internet, have no central administrative control and no unified security policy. Furthermore, the number and nature of the nodes connected to such networks cannot be fully known. Despite the best efforts of security practitioners,...
